The Department of Safety and Fire has conducted an alumni guest lecture “Safety in Demolition works” for II-year and III-year students on April 1st, 2023. The Event was organized by Mr.M.Matheswaran HoD, S&F, Convenor, Mrs.S.Sowdeshwari Assistant Professor, CIVIL was Staff Coordinator of the event. The Resource person was Mr.R.Suresh , Assistant Engineer, URC construction Pvt.Ltd. Bangalore. The session started with a welcome address by M.Matheswaran followed by presidential address given by Principal sir Dr.M.Premkumar. Ms.S.Jayasudha II-year B.Tech Biotechnology student briefed the profile of the speaker and invited for the session.
The Resource person spoke about the concepts of Safety guidelines that provide a safe procedure for demolition of buildings and structures. Associated hazards include collapse of structure, falling material, flying material, impact/ hit by material, collapse of equipment/ machinery, noise, entrapment, fall from height, electrocution, fire, explosion etc. Also, he explained that demolition work can be a physically demanding job. Workers must be able to lift heavy objects and use power tools safely. They also need to have good coordination and balance. He then detailed every step involved in the demolition of the building, which is the process of dismantling or destroying a structure after its life of serviceability, by pre-planned and controlled methods. It covered all aspects related to the safety in demolition works acknowledging the global significance of safety and fire. A total of 58 students attended the lecture. The lecture was very informative and thought provoking. The resource person clarified the queries raised by the students. The Vote of thanks was delivered by Ms.S.Swetha II year B.Tech Biotechnology. The feedback form was posted at the end of session and e – certificates were issued for the active participants.
