The Department of Biotechnology has organised an online Guest Lecture on “Recent developments in antibiotics resistance and bacteriophage therapy” on September 6, 2023. The resource person was Dr. Ramesh Nachimuthu Assistant Professor (Sr), Secretary for Bacteriophage Research and Therapy, Department of Biotechnology, School of Bio sciences and Technology, Vellore Institute of Technology. The session started with greetings and presidential address given by our principal sir Dr. M. Premkumar. Mr. Harinanth sunilkumar from III- B.Tech-Biotechnology briefed the profile of the speaker. Initially the lecturer gave the introduction of antibiotics resistance and evolution of alternative products to tackle the bacterial infections. He showed some statistical report which emphasizes the global concerns for antibiotic resistance. Among the alternatives currently phage therapy is the best method to overcome the problem. He depicted the work flow of how antibiotic resistance spreads and the lytic cycle of bacteriophage and covered all aspects of phage therapy research. Gradually, the speaker detailed about the dosage level of phage that act against bacteria and criteria for the selection of phage. He used G. mellonella larva used for testing of phage against a particular disease. He also said that in country like Georgia, the phage therapy has been approved and used to treat multi-resistance bacterial disease. The guest also emphasized that this therapy is very specific only to the target. He answered all the queries from the participants. A total of 173 students attended the lecture, which went for 1.30hrs. The lecture was very informative and interactive that was concluded by a vote of thanks given by Ms. Astalakshmi III B.Tech-Biotechnology. e- Certificates were issued for the participants.
