The Department of Biotechnology has conducted a Guest lecture on the topic “Diet, Nutrition and Cancer” on October 6, 2023. The Resource person was Dr.M.Sridevi, Professor and Head, Department of Biotechnology, Vinayaka Mission’s Kirupananda Variyar Engineering College, Salem. The session started with the brief profile introduction of the esteemed guest by Ms.Renupriya, B.Tech Biotechnology III year student. The guest lecturer explained about the concepts of Cancer and how a good diet with balanced nutritions can help to keep our body healthy and to prevent cancer formation. She started off by presenting the PPT which wonderfully explained the formation of cancer cells in the human body due to exposure to various carcinogens and other external sources. She also explained the comparative pathway of how a tumor cell is formed and spreads to different locations with respect to the normal cell cycle. She then emphasized on the correlation between nutrition, diet and its effects on cancer formation. She made us acknowledge the importance of having a balanced diet in order to prevent cancerous cell formation. She also highlighted the significance of vegetables and organic food over junk food to better prevent cancer. Finally, she ended her session by praising our ancestors, as we follow their steps in consuming nutrition rich and well-balanced diet which naturally helps prevent cancer. She insisted on student interactive session and her teaching and presentation was wonderful and thought provoking and really insightful. A total of 168 students attended the lecture which went for 1 and a half hours. It was a thought feeding session and concluded by answering the queries of students followed by vote of thanks given by Ms. Gomathi, final year Biotechnology student. The feedback form was posted at the end of session which has certain questions and suggestions to improve the Guest lecture in future and e-certificates were issued for the active participants to their mail.
