The Department of Biotechnology has conducted a guest lecture on “Development of herbal formulation” on September 01, 2023. The resource person was Dr.P.Thirugnanasampantham, Head of Rumi Herbals R&D centre, Director of Rohini Global Marketing Pvt.Ltd and Rohini Holistic Health Centre in Chennai. The session started with welcome address by Dharnika K, IV year Biotechnology followed by presidential address given by our Principal, Dr.M.Premkumar in which he laid foundation about the history of Ayurveda and siddha for the event. Ms.Haarshaa from III year Biotechnology briefed the profile of the speaker. Initially the resource person gave awareness about the reduced side-effects of AYUSH medicine when compared to Allopathy medicine. In his presentation he depicted the importance and wellness of herbal plants standing as a live example. It covered all aspects of the impact of food components we consume in our day-to-day life. Gradually, the speaker insisted about the importance of AYUSH that has been followed by traditional Indians to cure a wide variety of diseases faced by the modern world. For the past 27 years, Dr.P.Thirugnanasamptham had formulated more than 80 herbal products out of which 2 products (Arogh and Vilva) had been discussed by him in the session. He enumerated the importance of the Lotus plants and Bael fruit as a main source. He defined certain methodologies for testing and clinical trials. Finally he distributed his own herbal drink named “Rumi vilva” that has been formulated for digestive problems. Currently, he is working on a diabetic supplement which mainly consists of herbal ingredients that comes under kayakalpa like fenugreek, blueberries, etc. He acknowledged the global significance of formulation of herbal products and emphasized that any projects should bring herbal solutions to the health problems and encouraged us to formulate many herbal products. A total of 80 students attended the lecture, which went for 2 hours followed by answering various queries of the students. The session was very informative, interactive and thought-feeding that was concluded by a vote of thanks by Ms. Swarnika J IV- Biotechnology.
